台灣現在是男女平等
- Is it still a Taiwanese custom for wives to obey their husbands?
- Well, that's the old-fashioned way. Now a lot of young women think they are equal to men.

- 呃,那是老式的作法。現在許多年輕女性認為她們與男性是平等的。
小常識
台灣受日本殖民五十年，許多老一輩的人都習慣日本人的觀念與處事方法。在某喜餅廣告裡，特地提到新娘的媽媽稱呼她爸叫「老闆」，可見大男人主義在中 年以上的族群還是相當普遍。隨著女性經濟獨立成為常態，她們對婚姻的看法也與以前大大不同；結婚不是為了一張長期飯票(permanent meal ticket)，而是戀愛的結果。有些新人類甚至只要同居不要「婚」，一言不合就拍拍屁股走人。若是經濟不獨立，何來此豪氣?

假如大家把a Taiwanese/local custom這種說法記下來，相信就可以把很多具有台灣特色的東西，更有效率地介紹給外 國朋友。譬如說:
It is a Taiwanese custom to avoid getting married in the Ghost Month.
(避免在鬼月結婚是台灣人的習俗。)
It's been a local custom for parents to help their kids with their coats, hats, shoes, etc.
(這裡的風俗習慣是，做父母的要幫孩子穿外套、戴帽子、穿鞋子等等。)
old-fashioned way是指「老式的作法」、「過時的作法」，old-fashioned 就是「舊式的」、「過時的」。我們再來看下面 這個例子:
I still use an old-fashioned electric oven.
(我現在還在用舊式電爐。)
